One powerful book

I just finished one of the most powerful graphic novels I have ever read. I picked the book for our 7th grade Book and Bag discussion group and I am so PLEASED to be able to share it with them and will you.

The Storm in the Barn by Matt Phelan

Please check it out and let me know what you think. Pages 123-131 OMG that is all I have to say. Author/illustrator Matt Phelan's artwork conveys in very small ways the powerful emotions of the men, women and children living through this heartwrenching time in American history. It is not a history lesson but a book that will make everyone want to learn more the Dust Bowl and the 1930's.

Percy Jackson

I just finished the first book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, The Lightning Thief. I admit it wasn't half bad though from what I have heard about the movie, fans are annoyed that Annabeth's hair is the wrong color. It will be interesting to see the movie after reading the book though WOW couldn't the producers of the movie have gotten someone who looks at least like he is in middle school. OMG the actor looks like he could be in high school and he is supposed to be a SIXTH GRADER. Argh!

Enough of my quick rant, the trailor does look good and yes I will see the movie (especially since one of my favorite actors, Sean Bean, is playing Zeus). I look forward to reading the second book soon.

( on 15-Feb-10) I went to go see the movie last night and I was SADLY disappointed. It was one of the worst movies based on a book I have seen in a long time.

Wolf Moon

I was so excited to see the first full moon of 2010 but the Ohio weather did not cooperate (at least in my neck of the woods)

What was so special about the first full moon? Well it is supposed to be the brightest and biggest due to being closer to the earth than normal.

"The 2010 wolf moon will appear 30 percent brighter and 14 percent larger than any other full moon this year, because our cosmic neighbor will actually be closer to Earth than usual." National Geographic Online.

I have a love/hate relationship with full moons. I LOVE how they look and light up the sky on a clear night but I "hate" the idea that a full moon makes people do odd things (or at least it seems like it).

"Many people think full moons cause strange behavior among animals and even humans. In fact several studies over the years have tried to tie lunar phases to births, heart attacks, deaths, suicides, violence, psychiatric hospital admissions and epileptic seizures, and more. Connections have been inclusive or nonexistent." Fox News Online

National Pie Day

Did you know there was a day devoted to pies?!!!!! I didn't until this week.

Saturday, January 23 is National Pie Day!

Some interesting facts for you on this wonderful pie day

Before pie was America's favorite dessert, fruit pies were commonly eaten as part of breakfast in the 19th century.

The term "as American as apple pie" traces back to 14th century England. The Pilgrims brought their pie-making skills, along with the apple seeds to America. As the popularity of apple pie spread throughout the nation, the phrase grew to symbolize American prosperity. (http://www.crisco.com/Articles_Tips/Central/Pie_Central/fun_pie_facts.aspx )

There is even an American Pie Council. So get with it and bake a pie, eat a slice of pie, have a pie tasting party, knit a slice of pie

The pie world is endless!

( on 27-Jan-10) I loved The Reformed Vampire Support Group. It is nice to read a refreshing and different vampire novel that is nothing at all like Stephenie Meyer's Twilight crap.

( on 28-Jan-10) I tried to read The Reformed Vampire Support Group and wanted so badly to like it, but I just could not get into it. I found it to be kind of boring. maybe I didn't give it a fair try.

Summit on the Summit

On January 7, music artist Kenna, actors Jessica Biel and Emile Hirsch along with many others began their long hike up Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania to raise awareness for the global clean water crisis. I heard about this group in the fall and now it is happening. Summit on the Summit website is one of the coolest websites I have ever been on. Gives you a chance to donate to the cause, find more information, climb the mountain with an individual climber, tweet the team, read blogs, and watch videos of the ascent to the top. I will be following the Summit on the Summit group and I will keep you informed on the progress. As of 8:20pm EST the team is camped at 11, 841 ft. Mt. Kilimanjaro is 19, 340ft!

Good luck SOTS team!

Teen Readers Theatre practice begins Thursday, Jan 7th!

We have an exciting opportunity for teens who like acting and singing and, in general, hamming it up! The Northwest Library Teen Readers’ Theatre Troupe will perform Topsy Turvey for an audience of children this February. During this program, teens will perform a variety of silly songs and stories for younger children. Think of it as backwards storytime! Some of the stories we will be performing are Bedhead by Margie Palatini, Can You Make a Scary Face by Jan Thomas and The Wolf Who Cried Boy by Bob Hartman.

But first, we need committed, charismatic, fun-loving teenagers to turn these topsy turvy kids’ books into scripts for the show. To be in the final performance of Topsy Turvy., teens must attend 4 of 5 practices. Teens don’t have to have any stage experience to be a part of the Readers’ Theatre Troupe. A love of silliness, books and fun is all that’s required!
