I am back from my trek to Africa. What an amazing amazing place to visit! I highly suggest every one of you put Africa on your to visit list. The people of Botswana are so incredibly friendly, the animals beautiful and the landscape awe inspiring. Everyone that is a follower of this blog should know I wholeheartedly advocate traveling and learning about other cultures. This trip was life changing for me. I witnessed a leopard in labor and got to see the baby cubs hours after they were born. OMG!!!!!!!

Check out some of the pictures.

( on 01-Sep-10) The pictures are awesome! I can't believe you got to see a leopard have babies. That is incredible.

( on 01-Sep-10) Mandy, I didn't actually see the birth. We tried to be very respectful of the mother and left before she had the babies.

( on 01-Sep-10) Ann Thanks for sharing, The wildlife pics are awesome !,The cub birth experience is a rare live entry experience, I'll appreciate the cubs emotions at birth and the mom leopard attitude in narratives when you have the time.

Just came across this article on USAToday.com that says baby carrots are getting a cool new makeover. Hmmm....so do you think people will suddenly be tricked into eating baby carrots because the bag is neon green and has a hip new slogan? This Halloween, look for "scarrots" in your school's vending machine!

Hello teens of Worthington! My name is Ellie and I’m super excited to be doing my first guest blog post for the Worthingteen Blog. I’m a practicum student, which means I’m learning and working at the Worthington Libraries because I want to do just what your teen librarians Ann, Gwen, and Jen do.

I CANNOT BELIEVE WE ONLY HAVE A MONTH UNTIL GLEE STARTS UP AGAIN! The first episode of the second season airs on Tuesday, September 21. If you couldn’t tell, I’m a BIG Glee fan and have been since their single-episode premiere after Adam Lambert lost American Idol. There’s just something about those singing Lima, Ohio kids that makes me completely happy. I’ve heard that there’s going to be a Rocky Horror Picture Show episode, as well as a Britney Spears themed episode. How could they go wrong?!

So my friends and I have an un-written Glee rule that when we watch it together, no one is allowed to sing along to the songs in a new episode, UNLESS everyone says it’s okay. Old episodes are always fair-game for singing along.

Also, don’t forget, Ann is having an awesome Glee program called Get Your GLEEK On! at Old Worthington Library on Saturday, September 18 at 4pm.

Our questions to you: Do you sing along to new episodes of Glee? How about old episodes? What are you looking forward to most this season?

Annexed, a FABULOUS companion to The Diary of Anne Frank, causes some controversy

I just finished Annexed by Sharon Dogar and I LOVED IT! When I think about the myriad of mediocre teen fiction published these days, I get kind of cranky. Teens deserve quality literature!! Lots of things are just getting published because publishers know they will sell, even though the writing is blah. So I am super excited to find a book that I love! I honestly believe Annexed is one of the best written books published in 2010. Enough of my gushing, let me tell you about the book.

Annexed is the imagined story of Peter van Pels, the real life boy who was stuck in the attic with Anne Frank. Sharon Dogar uses Anne Frank's diary and historical facts to imagine Peter's side of the story. Ms. Dogar imagines what life must have been like for Peter, a teenaged boy stuck in an attic with two girls and so she imagines him falling in love with Anne Frank. At first, Peter thinks of Anne as an annoying child who is always going through his "room" to get to the attic. After Anne and Peter are in hiding for several months, they can't really avoid each other and become friends. They spends lots of time in the attic looking out at a little peice of sky trying to remember the outside. Peter starts to notice things about Anne, like how she smells, and he begins to fall in love with her. Make no mistake, this is a story about the Holocaust and if you are familiar with Anne Frank's story, you know this story does not have a happy ending. But...I loved reading this book from Peter's perspective and will recommend it to everyone I see!

I actually wrote a review of Annexed for VOYA. When I have to write a professional review, I never look the book up online or talk about it with anyone because I dont want anything to sway my opinion of the book. I decided to write this blog post and went in search of some links, I found some interesting articles that note that Annexed has caused some controversy:

The Guardian has an article titled 'Sharon Dogar fights back over 'sexed up' Anne Frank Novel"

The NYDailyNews.com also published an article called "Anne Frank's cousin angry about racy fictional Peter van Pels diary, 'Annexed,' by Sharon Dogar"

I've read the book and never ever came away with the idea that Peter and Anne had sex. They do share a kiss, but definitely no sex. I wonder if the people criticizing Annexed really read it. Hmm....check it out (it comes out in October 2010) and decide for yourself.

Back to school.
Back to school. Well, here goes nothing."
- Adam Sandler in Billy Madison

This time of year, I always get the song that Adam Sandler sung in Billy Madison stuck in my head. Fall and going back to school brings so much possibility!

Africa bound

Tomorrow your teen librarian Ann P. is heading out to parts unknown. For all the regular blog readers out there, you know that I LOVE LOVE LOVE to travel and this time I will be flying to Botswana. Where??!! Yep, it is lions and tigers oh my. My flight leaves tomorrow morning but I don't get to Africa until Wednesday evening and even better I won't get to my first camp till afternoon on Thursday. (flying is the only thing I hate about traveling)

Here is a little background information for you. Botswana is north of South Africa, west of Namibia and east of Zimbabwe. Total population equals @2 million. Median age 22. It is late winter in Botswana right now so the weather is perfect, mid to high 80s during the day and low 50s at night. PERRFECT!

I end my stay in Africa at Victoria Falls (Mosi-oa-Tunya--the Smoke that Thunders). I plan on white water rafting down the Zambezi River. Pictures will be posted when I get back.

I will be gone for two weeks and I while I am gone, y'all will be starting back to school. WOW where has the summer gone. It seems like yesterday that the summer reading program was starting. I hope everyone enjoys your first week back to school. I look forward to seeing everyone again.

The athor of the blog, Heather Zundel, is a HUGE HUGE Hunger Games fan and to pass time between books she came up with a game that people will get to vote on. YA Fantasy Showdown pits 'famous' fanstasy characters from young adult books in a tournament. The voting and the tournament start August 10.

Here is a quick peek at the homepage of the YA Fantasy Showdown. None of the team names have been chosen but teams have been picked. Katsa and Edward Cullen (Team #1) vs. Christopher Grant and Hermione Granger (Team #2) There are 16 teams in the tournament. It will be interesting to see who reigns supreme.

Mockingjay (The Final Book of the Hunger Games) by Suzanne Collins comes out August 24th

Anyone going to the Ohio State Fair this year? Once again I will be abstaining from the pleasure of fried Snickers, the 1200lb hog (though I have seen pictures from Sarah Cofer's husband) the heat and the rides. I honestly don't know why I am so not interested in going to the fair but I am.

Here is a bit o trivia for you to research. Which state boasts hosting the largest state fair? and Which state has the oldest?

( on 03-Aug-10) Honestly, that 1200lb hog was quite impressive! And you can't miss the butter cow. I really wanted some freshly made rootbeer, but didn't get anybecause it was outrageously priced. My favorite part of the fair this year was the legos tent. We had a blast entering the tallest lego contest. We lost, but we had fun.

( on 03-Aug-10) Apparently, Texas holds the largest state fair (by annual attendance), but Minnesota has the largest in terms of daily attendance. As for the oldest state fair, that is claimed by Michigan.

( on 04-Aug-10) I LOVE the fair! I'm going this year on Triple AAA $4 day. I love to eat the snacks and my favorite ride it the bumper boats. They're so fun!

Last night, I was flipping through the channels wondering what to watch when I saw Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney performing on PBS. What really grabbed my attention was that it was at the White House and I could see Obama in the audience! I decided to keep it on for a while to see what was going on. Turns out it was a show called Paul McCartney: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song In Performance at the White House. I tuned in towards the end, so I missed a lot of the performance, but I did get to see Obama speak about the music of Paul McCartney (who was a member of the Beatles) and Paul McCartney speak about what an honor it was to perform at the White House.

Before the part that I saw, there were a lot of musicians that covered Paul McCartney songs, including the Jonas Brothers, Faith Hill, Dave Grohl, Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello and Jack White. The coolest part of the whole show was getting to see Obama and his family rocking out to the Beatles songs Michelle, Eleanor Rigby, and Let it Be. At the end, all of the musical guests and the Obama family got up on stage and sang & rocked out to Hey Jude, which just happens to be my very favorite Beatles song. It was a neat show.

Do you like the Beatles? What kind of music are you listening to lately?

( on 31-Jul-10) I haven't heard much of The Beatles, but they're brilliant as far as I know.

I've been listening to Groove Coverage lately. They're a German Euro-trance group. Their songs can be upbeat or sorrowful. They do venture on mature topics, though, kinda like my favorite music group, t.A.T.u.

( on 31-Jul-10) idk if i like them because i never listen to their music before.

I just finished reading ttyl by Lauren Myracle:

It's about Maddie, Zoe and Angela, best friends since forever, who are in the 10th grade and sort of growing apart. The entire book is written in IMs between the three friends. I've never read anything by Ms. Myracle before. I really enjoyed it and thought that the IM format was clever.

I already blogged about the plot of Numbers (you can read the post here), and my reserve finally came in the other day. I'm about 2/3 of the way through and I can't wait to find out what happens to the main characters. It's really suspenseful!

On my to-read list is Countdown, a novel set in the 60's that has bits and pieces of history and historical documents sprinkled throughout the story :

I also want to read The Outsiders, just because I never have and I think I should.

( on 27-Jul-10) The Outsiders is a really good book, but sometimes its kinda depressing. I would read it though if you get the chance. Right now, I am reading the second book in the Beka Cooper series. Its called Bloodhound. Its pretty good.

( on 28-Jul-10) i was reading the chesnut hill books and i have to say that they were great books. the only thing is that i didnt finish the third one because it was due someone had reserved it. but other wise it was a series i would recomend.

( on 28-Jul-10) How funny; I was just thinking about the novel ttyl today, out of nowhere. It occurred to me that I probably wouldn't be able to endure hours of reading chatspeak. I can barely tolerate it already.

Currently I'm reading The Hot Zone by Richard Preston. I just finished The Bonesetter's Daughter, the third in a string of Amy Tan books I've been meaning to read.

( on 29-Jul-10) AAAAAAAAHHHHH I have only one day until the reading program finishes and I have six squares left, i neeed 2 post more comments or read 2 books which i don't have time 4!!!

( on 29-Jul-10) The book the Outsiders is a really good book. I had to read it in school and i actually really liked it. If you read the book there is a movie that follows and thats really good too. But of course, the book is way better.

( on 30-Jul-10) the book Yankee girl is a good book for people who are having a hard time transitioning from a asiatic country to america espesially if you are a teenager and or younger

( on 30-Jul-10) THe twilight series is a good series for people who enjoyed the harry potter series and enjoyed the movies

( on 30-Jul-10) the book Hold Up is a very good book for people who like to watch shows like CSI or flashpoint.

( on 31-Jul-10) i am reading this awesome book called catching fire. if you haven't read this book you have to. it is a book you can not put down til you finish it.

There are rumors about a Hunger Games movie in development! So, my question for you is... who do you think should play the following characters:

Katniss
Peeta
Gale
Prim
Haymitch

Got any great ideas to throw out there?

( on 22-Jul-10) i didn't know they were making a hunger games movie! i'm so excited! i love those books.

( on 22-Jul-10) i think that they could make sterling knight could make a good peeta.

( on 22-Jul-10) I am very excited about the HG movie. I know it is in early developement (they don't even have a final script yet)

Here is who I think should play

Katniss- Mekena Melvin (she is an unknown, who is a little older, but I think she looks like Katniss and most importantly she can act!)

Peeta- Jake Abel or Alex Pettyfer.

NO Disney actors, or young actors or Kristen Stewart. As someone in their mid 20s, I want this to be a real movie, not some lame teeny movie.

( on 23-Jul-10) My mom says that she always sees Peeta as Finn from "Glee". I don't really know how, since Peeta is blonde. I think Taylor Lautner should play Gale. I really don't know any actors names, so I don't know who should play the rest of the characters.

( on 25-Jul-10) sound like good books ill have 2 read some.

( on 27-Jul-10) Oh my god. I didn't know they were making a movie out of this!!!!! I will die. But yeah, I always saw Peeta as a chubby blonde kid.... But, no matter how much I LOVE Taylor Lautner, I can't see him playing Gale. I always pictured him handsome, not like, buff. (after all, they are.....starving...) And, I agree with "valentine" I am soooo sick of Disney actors. It gets annoying after a while.

( on 31-Jul-10) okay, sterling knight should be peeta. gale should be Taylor lautner. haymitch i have no idea.Alyson stoner should be katniss. prim idk.

( on 20-Jul-10) i wish there was more time espicall for the older kids because we have to read 10 books. ten is alot because usually longer books are more interesting.

( on 21-Jul-10) the gossip girls series is good for people who liked the cluiqe series.

( on 21-Jul-10) I've been reading, posting on the blog, and attending events. Haven't gotten any of my prizes yet, but will next week. I liked it better last year when it was how long you read instead of how many books. My books take a while to read because they are longer, but I spend hours and hours reading them.

( on 21-Jul-10) I like the teen gaming at the Dublin library! I've read some of the Narnia books. I also agree that reading books takes much longer because my books are long and when I don't finish them it's a waste!

( on 22-Jul-10) I just finished today. I will be going to the library today. My favorite book that i read during it was probably "Along for the Ride" by Sarah Dessen.

( on 22-Jul-10) im going with mob mentality in saying that they should count how long you read because i read super long books that take several days to complete if i have nothing else to do. plus, it would help those who can't read very fast. i say like a point for every 30 minutes you read.

( on 26-Jul-10) I am almost finished. I have read several good books this summer. Currently I am reading "Do Hard Things" by Alex and Brett Harris.

( on 26-Jul-10) I am doing the read on right now. So far, i have three little sheets in raffle. Soon, I will have four. Right now, I am reading the Christy Miller Collection, and its addicting.

( on 27-Jul-10) I just finished the reading club like right now by posting this. Wahooooooo!!

( on 28-Jul-10) mabey next summer the library could hvae a set number of pages that you have to read to fill out a box that way we could read the longer books and not have to rush through them to finish the program.

( on 29-Jul-10) I finished the sheet. I read many really good books. I liked the coupon sheet and didn't really care for the clock. But i really want to win the $50 gift card!

( on 30-Jul-10) I am almost done! AH! It went so fast!

Teen Reader's Theatre rehearsals

We have an exciting opportunity for teens who like acting and singing and, in general, hamming it up! The Old Worthington Library Teen Readers’ Theatre Troupe will perform Peace, Love & Laughter for an audience of children August 7. During this program, teens will perform a variety of silly songs and stories for younger children. Think of it as backwards storytime! Some of the stories we will be performing are Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester and Mother, Mother, I Want Another by Maria Polushin Robbins.

But first, we need committed, charismatic, fun-loving teenagers to turn these kids’ books into scripts for the show. To be in the final performance of Peace, Love & Laughter, teens must attend 4 of 6 practices. Teens don’t have to have any stage experience to be a part of the Readers’ Theatre Troupe. A love of silliness, books and fun is all that’s required!

I Write Like

I stumbled upon an article today about a website that tells you who you write like. The website is I Write LIke. When you click on the link the user is taken to a homepage that says

"Check which famous writer you write like with this statistical analysis tool, which analyzes your word choice and writing style and compares them with those of the famous writers. "

You need to put in at least two or three paragraphs of your own writing for the analysis tool to really "work". The first time I put in some of my writing from my personal blog it came up with David Foster Wallace. The second time I did it, with a different blog entry, Stephen King. Hmmm. It is kind of fun to see what the answers are.

The website also includes quotes from writers about writing. You can even follow I Write Like on Facebook or Twitter.

That said I Write Like is not a serious site but just something to kill time. HAVE FUN!!

( on 19-Jul-10) thats interesting do they just compare ur story lines and stuff 2 famous writers?

( on 21-Jul-10) mine came up as stephan king 2

( on 22-Jul-10) i don't write much but it would be cool to see who i write like.

( on 26-Jul-10) It says I write like Chuck Palahniuk

( on 28-Jul-10) Cool!! I might try this sometime. Since there's a lot of writing projects and assignments in school, I might as well try it :-D

( on 28-Jul-10) I love this website! It's really cool, even tough there are only about 50 different author results you can get. I put in samples of as many different writings of mine as possible, and the results that I got most often were Dan Brown, author of The DaVinci Code (which I want to read very badly), and H.P. Lovecraft, a horror writer. (And speaking of horror, I did get Stephen King a number of times as well.) I didn't know I wrote so darkly. Haha.

( on 30-Jul-10) hmm.....sounds kind of interesting. it would be wierd to see who i write like.

Romances

I just finished reading Fat Cat, by Robin Brande, and absolutely loved it! It's about an overweight high school science lover (named Cat), who is in a hard core science class where she has to do a whole term project based on the picture she picks out of a hat at the beginning of the year. When she sees that her picture is of early humans, she's inspired to live like early humans did (giving up everything from foods that weren't available then to cars and telephones. When all that walking and eating whole foods has an effect on Cat, ans she starts dropping the pounds... the boys take notice! She goes from never dating anyone, to making out all night at the winter formal! But there's only one guy that truly catches Cat's eye, and they hate each other. I couldn't help but root for him, and so wanted a happy ending, but you'll have to read the book to find out!

Check it out, and tell us about your favorite romances!

( on 14-Jul-10) I really like this book. It was different than all the other romances. One of my all time favorite teen romance books is This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen.

( on 15-Jul-10) I love the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead! They are my second favorite series--only behind Harry Potter.

( on 16-Jul-10) My friend likes Sarah Dessen books- she always talks to me about them. I thik that Sarah is her favorite author now! As for my favorite romance... I really don't know. I'm more of a fantasy girl. Does anybody recomend anything?

The Barefoot Bandit

Have you heard of Colton Harris-Moore? AKA the "Barefoot Bandit?"

I hadn't until I watched a news special on him about a month or so ago. He's a nineteen year old who's been on the run from authorities since he escaped from a halfway house in the state of Washington in 2008. Apparently he's broken into homes in Washington, Idaho and Canada, stolen cars, boats and at least five airplanes. He also doesn't like to wear shoes, which is how he got the nickname "Barefoot Bandit." I read an article that said he had no formal flight training, yet he flew a stolen plane from Indiana to the Bahamas. That's insane! It amazes me in this day and age how it's possible to outrun the police, but this guy's done it for almost two years. Until he got busted in the Bahamas on Sunday during a high speed boat chase. He was barefoot and wearing a bullet proof vest at the time.

He pleaded guilty to stealing a plane and illegally landing in the Bahamas at his first court appearance in Nassau today and he faces burglarly and theft charges in several U.S. states.

I guess there are a lot of people who think Colton's a hero. They've written songs about him, made t-shirts proclaiming his innocence and he even has a facebook fan page with over 60,000 followers. People seem to think he's awesome because he's committed "victimless" crimes.

Should stealing property make you a hero? I certainly don't think so. It's not victimless, that's for sure. Think of the people whose boats, cars and planes got stolen, and whose homes and businesses got broken into. Just because he didn't murder or injure anyone doesn't mean that the crimes are victimless. Someone's always a victim when a crime is committed.

What do you think?

( on 14-Jul-10) I certainly don't think what he was doing is right. I think alot of people look up to other people because they aren't scared of boundaries, and they get out and do things when other people wouldn't have the guts. Does that make stealing heroic? I don't think so.

( on 14-Jul-10) I don't think what he was doing was right either. Stealing is definitely not heroic.

( on 15-Jul-10) I agree that it wasn't heroic . . . but I think it's amazing that he managed to outrun the police for that long! The kid has to be smart and I think credit should be given to him for that.
When I heard about the Barefoot Bandit, I immediately pictured Aidan and Meg Falconer from the "On the Run" series by Gordan Korman. Did anyone else get that impression?

( on 16-Jul-10) My question is this: Where did he get the bulletproof vest? Did he steal it? Ifso, from whom? I know that that is a lot of questions, but, where does this kid get all of the gadgets?

( on 16-Jul-10) wow this kid is amazing though what he was doing isnt right

( on 19-Jul-10) wow i think that is so wrong why would people conisitor him heroic if he is a criminal?

( on 19-Jul-10) how did the piloce not catch him? and who would do that?

( on 21-Jul-10) I agree that it is most definitely not a victimless crime. It's amazing that he was able to escape the police for two years. Even though I said that I don't think it's right to escape the police.

( on 23-Jul-10) i think tht wat he did was wrong, and i agree w/ every1 else tht theres always a victim when a crime is committed, name any 1 and i can name the victim,it is amazing tht he cud fly the plane w/out experience, i wud freak out

( on 28-Jul-10) Dude, totally NOT OK. Even though my first thought was the same thinking it was "victimless," stealing is still a nono:-( Sometime I knew he would be caught. I smart guy like him still can't get away.

( on 28-Jul-10) About a week ago, the Barefoot Bandit was on the news again, and my dad told me about him. It was the first time I'd heard of him. I can't help feeling impressed by his escapades, even though morally, what he does (or did) is wrong.

And I agree that a crime always has at least one victim, no matter what it is. Otherwise, it wouldn't be called a crime, you know?

( on 29-Jul-10) i don't think that he is a hero. i mean yeah he got away with the stuff he did for a while, but what he did was wrong.

( on 30-Jul-10) I think the victim here is himself. He's going to get caught.
