It is up to all of us to find ways to save water! According to True Green Kids by Kim McKay and Jenny Bonnin, the average US household uses 127,400 gallons of water per year! WOW! That is enough for 5 families to fill an Olympic size swimming pool every year.
Five things YOU can do now to help conserve water:
- Turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth. Leaving the water running uses about 3-5 gallons of water!
- Cut your shower time from 7 minutes to 4 minutes and you could save more than 6,600 gallons of water each year.
- Store drinking water in the fridge rather than letting it run until it is cool enough to drink.
- Don't flush tissues or "trash" down the toilet. Drop your tissue in the trash and save water.
- When you have ice left in your cup from a take-out restaurant, don't throw it in the trash, dump it on a plant.

I love to draw on the sidewalks with colorful chalk (I am not an artist though so most of mine ends up being sad looking trees and flowers)
DO YOU LOVE CHALK? If you do then join us at the Old Worthington LIbrary on Saturday, June 13 @10am to get your chalk drawing skills a movin. The theme is "green" recyling, environment, Mother earth, etc. You will have 1 hour to create your own work of art outside the library for everyone to see. We have chalk but bring your own if you would like. I would love to see if that new 3-D chalk actually works.
Also, around 11am Renuka Bhatt will be designing henna tattoos for anyone interested .
Check out this amazing sidewalk artist, Julian Beever (the pictures below are his)

Congrats Teens!!
You voted and Ann P's hair has turned an interesting color of ....
PURPLE!
The winning color was actually PINK but...... Ann tried twice to color her hair pink and it kept looking like a strawberry blonde hair style and never got to the color needed. So PURPLE was the second place winner. Head on over to the Old Worthington Library to check out your teen librarian's hairdo.
Why'd she do it?
For those of you not familiar with Ann's "coiffure covenant", she promised local teens that she'd dye her hair whatever color they wanted—so long as an impressive number of them completed the Summer Reading Program this year. They stepped up and met her requirements, so she met theirs.

In the entertainment industry, they call it "swag." It's the free stuff given to performers for simply showing up at events. This is your chance to live the rock star life and get some free stuff of your own. All you have to do is read a few books, attend some great library programs or write a book review to earn points.
Each completed activity will earn you one point. When you earn 10 points, you'll get to choose from a great selection of paperbacks. When you earn 20 points, you'll get a really cool black messenger bag—big enough to hold books, sketchpads and more! Plus attend the "Decorate your Bag Party" to make your bag unique.
The prizes will be earned on a point system. One point can be earned for the following activities.
1. Reading for 1 hour
2. Writing a book review
3. Attending a program
4. Pick a book off the teen booklists
Plus, you'll be entered into a final prize drawing at each branch to win your very own iPod shuffle. If you are really cool and want to read more than 20 points, you will be entered into the Worthington Libraries' Teen Grand Prize for a 20GB iPod, but only if you dare.
