When I got back to the library on Monday I counted all the earnings from the Teen Read-A-Thon we held to raise money to buy holiday presents for the United Methodist Children's Home. I so happy to report that the 10 teens who participated raised a grand total of $450.00! YAY! Way to go!
Thanks to everyone that particpated!

NORTHWEST LIBRARY'S TEEN READ-A-THON
DECEMBER 5th, 2009
On December 5th, Northwest Library will be hosting a Teen Read-A-Thon to earn money to buy holiday presents for the youth at the United Methodist Children's Home. Last year we raised just over $600 and hope to raise even more this year.
Readers in 7th through 12th grade are encouraged to participate in Northwest Library's Teen Read-a-Thon on Saturday, December 5 from 10am to 6pm. During the Read-A-Thon, participants should try to read as much as they can. You can read anything you want. You can read your favorite books to yourself or to one another. We invite you to stay for the whole day or just part of the day, whatever suits your schedule.
How It Works:
Readers should find their own sponsors. Ask family, friends, neighbors, businesses to make pledges towards the total pages you read (for example, someone could pledge 10 cents for every page you read, and if you read 300 pages, you will raise $30.00 for the United Methodist Children's Home!). Participants can pick up a pledge form at Northwest Library.
Who It Benefits:
The youth at the United Methodist Children's Home.
Goal: $800
Last year we raised $600 for the United Methodist Children's Home. Let's raise more this year!

We have an exciting opportunity for teens who like acting and singing and, in general, hamming it up!
The Northwest Library Teen Readers’ Theatre Troupe will perform C.L.U.E., Crazy, Laugh-out-Loud, Unique Entertainment. During this program, teens will perform favorite songs and stories for younger children.
But first, we need committed, charismatic, fun-loving teenagers to turn kids’ books into scripts for the show.
To be in the final performance of C.L.U.E., teens must attend 4 of 5 practices. Teens don’t have to have any stage experience to be a part of the Readers’ Theatre Troupe. A love of silliness, books and fun is all that’s required!

Well, the first ReUse, ReCreate, ReRead Teen Event happened on Thursday June 11th at Worthington Park Library. All three library locations will be hosting these crafting events, so be sure to check out the event calendar to find out which ones are coming up, and where!
Teens showed up at Worthington Park to create crafts out of recycled materials. For this session we made wallets and mini-journals out of cardboard boxes...mainly food boxes like cereal, brownies, etc. The wallets and journals turned out pretty neat- but the pictures of the snack foods made me hungry!
Here are some of the finished products:
Pretty Cool, right? I really liked the Snapple one that says "Made from the Best Stuff on Earth" right on the front.
If you have extra boxes laying around at home, there are only a few extra things you need to make these wallets:
- A thumbtack
- Elastic cord
- Scissors
I found the instructions on this cool website, Replayground. Check it out and make some on your own! Hope you'll come out and create some cool crafts out of recyclable products this summer and Get Your Green On!

In keeping with our green theme this summer, and in the spirit of finding other uses for everyday items, we are having a DUCT TAPE program at the Northwest Library this Saturday. Duck brand Duct Tape even has a scholarship competition for couples who create their prom outfits out of duct tape. The winners receive $3,000 EACH!
We won’t be quite that ambitious with this program. But if you have always wanted a tiara, a tie, a belt, or flip-flops made out of duct tape, stop by the Northwest Library Saturday afternoon. We have two different books with instructions on a variety of duct tape projects, as well as an assortment of colors. Graduating high school seniors – I recommend the flip-flops. You’ll need them for your dorm shower!

WORTHINGTON LIBRARIES TEEN READ-A-THON
DECEMBER 6th, 2008
On December 6th, Worthington Libraries will be hosting a Teen Read-A-Thon to earn money to buy holiday presents for the youth at the United Methodist Children's Home. Last year we raised just over $900 and hope to raise even more this year.
Readers in 7th through 12th grade are encouraged to participate in Worthington Libraries Teen Read-a-Thon on Saturday, December 6 from 9am to 6pm. Come to the library branch you prefer! We'll be hosting Read-A-Thons at all three Worthington Libraries locations: Northwest, Old Worthington and Worthington park.

Everyone's filling out their ballots at Worthington Park. I can't wait to see who wins the Teen Rock the Vote Library Presidential election! I'm almost running out of ballots at Worthington Park! In addition to the election being just a few weeks away....so is November, which is...National Novel Writing Month!
So I think I've always known that November is National Novel Writing Month—but for some reason (probably because I found this Web site: http://www.nanowrimo.org) this year, it's sticking with me.
First off, I've always wanted to write a book. It doesn't HAVE to be a novel. It could be a collection of essays or even a joke book or a picture book for kids. I don't care which kind, I've just always wanted to write one. That being said, my main excuse has always been I don't have TIME to write a book. I know I know, poor excuse.
And it makes me wonder: why did they pick NOVEMBER for National Novel Writing month?! I mean honestly: November is always so busy with Thanksgiving, and getting ready for Christmas (?!).... how is a person supposed to write a novel?! In a month?!
At any rate, I'm thinking about giving it a shot. Maybe not writing a WHOLE novel, but definitely getting back on the writing bandwagon I was on when I went to college. Would anyone else be interested in doing some writing workshops at Worthington Park Library after school? Maybe this winter?
I might need some Teen help to get my creative juices flowing! Post a comment if this is something you'd like to attend this winter, and I'll see what I can do.
Also, if you're in Worthington Park Library, check out the new Letters on top of the bookshelves that spell out T-E-E-N. We started painting and decorating them last night and I think they look really neat! We still have more work to do on them, so if you're interested (and can track me down while you're at the library) let me know if you'd like to contribute to the 'communal art project' that is the T-E-E-N Sign at Worthington Park. I'll get the supplies out for you and create a workspace. The more teens who contribute, the cooler the end result will be!
I'll be sure to post some more pictures of the sign asap. Thanks!

Well, Teen Read Week was a blast — and we had lots of fun, food and activities all week at the Worthington Libraries. I've posted some pictures from Worthington Park in the Fall 2008 picture section. Now, with Teen Read Week over, it's time to move on to other fun events at the library!
Northwest and Worthington Park's children's sections of the library have been given their final "facelift" for the last steps of the Worthington Libraries' system-wide renovation. I put up some more pictures of Worthington Park. I think it looks great! It's much more colorful and the little kids who come into the library love seeing all of the characters on the walls and the carousel in the corner. I can't wait to see Old Worthington's finished product!
Because the Children's area looks so fancy, I decided that the Teen Area at Worthington Park needs some tweaking, too, as far as decorations go. So, this Wednesday at Worthington Park's Drop In DIY night (from 5-8pm) we'll be decorating huge letters that spell out the word TEEN, to place on top of the shelving in the Teen Area. In addition to being a cool way to let people know where the teen books are, it's an opportunity for you teens to showcase your artistic talents and put them on display at the library. I can't wait to post pictures once they're finished!
Speaking of DIY crafts, I've finally decided what I'm going to be for Halloween—and it's a DIY project! I have been attempting to sew and craft it together in my spare time. Here's where I got my inspiration. I'm not sure which character I'm going to be yet; but I have some options with three different colored suits. Haha! Is anyone else dressing up this year? Making your own costumes? I'd love to see them or hear about your ideas!
We've also started the Rock the Vote Campaign for Teens at all three branches.
Go to the teen area and vote for YOUR choice for President!
Also, if you'd like to make a suggestion for programs and projects to do at the library, you can include that on the back of your ballot! If you don't see a ballot box or ballots laying around, ask a Librarian and they'll track some down for you. We've also go information on the candidates available at all three locations, so take a gander and vote on the candidate that you like best!
We'll be posting more info about upcoming events, so keep coming back to the blog; or chat up your branch's Teen Librarian to hear about the fun stuff that's planned!!!

October 13th-17th, 2008 is:TEEN READ WEEK!!!!
What is it?Each year, the American Library Association's teen division (YALSA: Young Adult Library Services Association) creates a theme for this week – Teen Read Week. The idea is to get teens excited about reading. In fact, their overall theme is always "Read for the Fun of it!" which – duh, reading IS fun. But this year's theme (in addition to Read for the fun of it) is Books with Bite.
Since the theme is Books with Bite, Worthington Libraries teen librarians got together and came up with some fun activities to do this coming week, which all have to do with "biting".
Worthington Libraries is celebrating Teen Read Week this year at ALL THREE BRANCHES with cool activities for Teens Monday through Thursday.
So to celebrate BOOKS WITH BITE at Worthington Libraries:
- We're making candy sushi you can BITE into (It just LOOKS like sushi, but is made out of candy!)
- We're watching scary BITING movies (Old-timey flicks on in the teen area!)
- We're playing Wii BITING games
- Making sweet BITING goth puppets (okay it might be tough to make them bite, but they'll look cool – Ha!)
- And playing BITING Pacman tournaments at the library.
Registration is not required so stop by!!!

Northwest Library held its very first Anime Teen Screen last Saturday. We watched the first six episodes of the anime series "Fruits Basket", about a girl who befriends three guys possessed by spirits of the zodiac. Basically that means that whenever they touch a girl they turn into whichever animal spirit possesses them, like a cat, a rat, or a dog. There are three other DVDs that follow, and Worthington Libraries owns them all! Along with the manga that it's based on, of course.Twenty-two people attended — we actually ran out of seats in the teen room and people had to sit on the floor! The viewers voted on what to watch next month, and SCHOOL RUMBLE was the winner! The DVD description says it's "The absolutely funniest show you'll ever see that's not about anything that rumbles... ever!" MoonPhase came in a close second. We'll be showing School Rumble on Saturday, October 11 at 3pm. Come early to get a good seat...

When he arrived, we sat him down in the Northwest Library teen room and had him answer YOUR questions by video to post on our Worthingteens blog.

John Green is coming to Northwest Library in less than a week! WOW! He called me on the phone the other day and even though I wasn't here to take the call (sniff sniff), it was still so cool to get a message that said "John Green called for you." Call me star-struck, but how often does a famous author call me? Definitely never!John Green mentioned his upcoming visit to Northwest on his video blog today and I am now even more excited (if that is possible). I just can't wait!!!
Come celebrate in an "Evening of Awesome" with John Green, author of award winning teen books, Looking for Alaska, An Abundance of Katherines, and his newest upcoming release: Paper Towns!
John will be talking about his books, the famous Brotherhood 2.0 video-blogging project (check it out if you haven't already at http://www.brotherhood2.com) and writing in general. He'll also be answering questions and signing books. Books will be available for purchase at the library, and we'll be raffling off signed copies—even Advanced Readers Copies of Paper Towns!
Come hang out and show John Green what kind of Nerdfighters we are in Ohio!
When: Monday, September 8th, 2008Fire up your questions and John Green might answer them during a video he will help us make for our website!
Time: 7:00 pm
Where: Northwest Library, outdoor area (in back of the library)
What would you ask John Green if given the chance? And as John would say: "Post your answers in the comments!"
Teen librarians will be selecting the most creative questions to ask John while he's here—and he'll answer in a video blog!

The FIRST EVER Anime Teen Screen is happening Saturday, September 20th at 3pm at the Northwest Library. We'll be showing the first six episodes of anime series "Fruits Basket" (also called Furuba), based on the graphic novel series by Natsuki Takaya (which are available at all three of your beloved Worthington Libraries). We'll hole up in the new teen room, snack on snacks, and watch "Fruits Basket" on a big screen. This is the first of three anime screenings this fall - you'll have the opportunity to vote on which titles we watch in the coming months. The best part is, the library gets to keep the movies we screen!
It's called a SCREENING because the company that gives us the DVDs, FUNimation, wants to know what YOU think. After the show, you have the opportunity to give your review and help FUNimation decide which shows and movies are popular! If you love anime, don't miss this chance to tell FUNimation what you like (they bring a lot of Anime to the U.S. – check out their website), and help the library pick which titles to screen next. If you're new to anime, come see what it's all about!
No need to register – just show up with all your anime-loving or wannabe-anime-loving friends.
Bloggers – I'm no anime expert. How would you explain anime?

You've probably heard that Printz award winning Young Adult Author John Green is coming on Monday, September 8th to Northwest Library. We're all SO EXCITED!I've read Looking for Alaska, and Paper Towns, and I am working on An Abundance of Katherines. I am trying to compile the proper questions to ask him when he comes, since some of the event will include a Q&A forum.
BUT we're hoping John will take some questions from YOU: our Blog Readers.
So Teens: What would you ask John Green if given the chance? And as John would say: "Post your answers in the comments!"
Teen librarians will be selecting the most creative questions to ask John while he's here—and he'll answer in a video blog!

We had a fabulous tournout for our first ever Teen Read-A-Thon! the goal was to raise money for the United Methodist Children's Home. Twenty-five teens participated and all but 5 teens did the long haul from 9am-6pm. Margaret Peterson Haddix spoke at 9:30 and several teens brought books for her to sign. Lisa Klein spoke at 1pm and she created some new fans!! Then at 4:00 we started Reading Olympics. Everyone had a blast hula hooping, doing the limbo playing twister while reading. I will have pictures soon. But the most important thing to report is that YOU have raised $515.00 so far and money is still coming in!
Thanks for making this season alot brighter for others.

On December 1st, the Northwest Library will be hosting a Read-A-Thon to earn money to buy holiday presents for the youth at the United Methodist Children's Home. Last year, we held a Holiday Bazaar where we sold baked goods, crafts and gently used items. We raised just over $600 and hope to raise even more this year. Because of the renovation, we don't have the space to hold the Bazaar, so we came up with the idea of the Read-A-Thon!
The Read-A-Thon will feature celebrity readers: Margaret Peterson Haddix and Lisa Klein!! See the schedule of events below.
Readers in 7th through 12th grade are encouraged to participate in Northwest Library's Teen Read-a-Thon on Saturday, December 1 from 9am to 6pm. During these 9 hours, participants should try to read as much as they can.
Participants can pick up a pledge form at the Northwest Library Information Desk.
Who It Benefits:
The youth at the United Methodist Children's Home.
Goal: $800
Last year we raised $650 for the United Methodist Children's Home. Let's raise more this year!
Schedule of Events:
| 9:00am: | Get settled. Wear comfy clothes, and feel free to bring sleeping bags, blankets, and pillows to create your own cozy nook in the Story Garden. |
||
| 9:30am: | Celebrity Reader: Margaret Peterson Haddix will read from her newest book Uprising. After Margaret Peterson Haddix is done reading, we will raffle off an autographed copy of her book! |

||
| 1:00pm: | Celebrity Reader: Lisa Klein will read from her book Ophelia. After Lisa Klein is done reading, we will raffle off an autographed copy of her book. |

| 4:30pm: | Reading Olympics! To celebrate the end of the Read-a-Thon, we'll have a little fun. Can you read while Hula Hooping? How about the Limbo? |

- T-SHIRTS TOO!! The 30 teens who read the most pages will receive a T-Shirt with the Read-A-Thon logo.
Download the Pledge Form here (PDF; 976KB) or pick up a copy at the Northwest Library Information Desk. All forms and money raised should be turned in by December 8.
