Teen Reader's Theatre rehearsals
Posted by: Ann Pechacek

We have an exciting opportunity for teens who like acting and singing and, in general, hamming it up!  The Old Worthington Library Teen Readers’ Theatre Troupe will perform Peace, Love & Laughter for an audience of children August 7.  During this program, teens will perform a variety of silly songs and stories for younger children. Think of it as backwards storytime! Some of the stories we will be performing are Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester and Mother, Mother, I Want Another by Maria Polushin Robbins.
But first, we need committed, charismatic, fun-loving teenagers to turn these  kids’ books into scripts for the show. To be in the final performance of Peace, Love & Laughter, teens must attend 4 of 6 practices. Teens don’t have to have any stage experience to be a part of the Readers’ Theatre Troupe. A love of silliness, books and fun is all that’s required!
Rehearsals are planned at Old Worthington Library:
  • Wednesday, July 21 at 6pm
  • Thursday, July 22 at 6pm
  • Wednesday, July 28 at 6pm
  • Thursday, July 29 at 6pm
  • Wednesday, August 4 at 6pm
  • Thursday, August 5 at 6pm
  • Saturday, August 7 at 10am (final performance at 11am!)

Seriously groovy summer programs have made Worthington Libraries the hippest hangout around, but there’s still lots of summer left and plenty of time for far-out fun!

This Saturday, July 17 from 2-5 at all three Worthington Libraries locations, join us for “Bookstock,” a 1960s-themed afternoon of games and contests. How much do you know about
the 1960s? Show off during a trivia contest by answering questions like “Who is the only President to take office on an airplane?” You can also challenge your friends to old school board games.

If you just can’t cut the electrical cord, don’t worry, we’ll also have a Rock Band videogame tournament, and wear your hippie threads for a costume contest – bellbottoms and maxi dresses are mandatory!

All three Worthington Libraries locations have “Bookstock” activities planned from 2-5 pm this Saturday. Don’t miss the summer’s coolest scene, join us!

Well Ann and I finally made it back from Ireland, no thanks to the huge storm that hit Philly on saturday. When I got back to the library on Monday I counted all the earnings from the Teen Read-A-Thon we held to raise money to buy holiday presents for the United Methodist Children's Home. I so happy to report that the 10 teens who participated raised a grand total of $450.00! YAY! Way to go!

Thanks to everyone that particpated!

Teen Read-a-Thon 2009
Posted by: Sarah Cofer

Get your books ready, it's time for

NORTHWEST LIBRARY'S TEEN READ-A-THON

DECEMBER 5th, 2009

On December 5th, Northwest Library will be hosting a Teen Read-A-Thon to earn money to buy holiday presents for the youth at the United Methodist Children's Home.  Last year we raised just over $600 and hope to raise even more this year.

Readers in 7th through 12th grade are encouraged to participate in Northwest Library's Teen Read-a-Thon on Saturday, December 5 from 10am to 6pm. During the Read-A-Thon, participants should try to read as much as they can. You can read anything you want. You can read your favorite books to yourself or to one another. We invite you to stay for the whole day or just part of the day, whatever suits your schedule.

How It Works:
Readers should find their own sponsors. Ask family, friends, neighbors, businesses to make pledges towards the total pages you read (for example, someone could pledge 10 cents for every page you read, and if you read 300 pages, you will raise $30.00 for the United Methodist Children's Home!). Participants can pick up a pledge form at Northwest Library.

Who It Benefits:
The youth at the United Methodist Children's Home.

Goal: $800
Last year we raised $600 for the United Methodist Children's Home. Let's raise more this year!

Tim Gunn, the REAL host of Project Runway and Austin Scarlett, a former contestant on the show
hosted the event.

Check out these episodes of Anti-Prom 2009 on YouTube. The first episode follows contestants as they research
what they're going to design, and the second episode the hosts meet with the teens and discuss their entries.

ReUse, ReCreate, ReRead
Posted by: Mandy Simon

Well, the first ReUse, ReCreate, ReRead Teen Event happened on Thursday June 11th at Worthington Park Library. All three library locations will be hosting these crafting events, so be sure to check out the event calendar to find out which ones are coming up, and where!

Teens showed up at Worthington Park to create crafts out of recycled materials. For this session we made wallets and mini-journals out of cardboard boxes...mainly food boxes like cereal, brownies, etc. The wallets and journals turned out pretty neat- but the pictures of the snack foods made me hungry!

Here are some of the finished products:

Pretty Cool, right? I really liked the Snapple one that says "Made from the Best Stuff on Earth" right on the front.

If you have extra boxes laying around at home, there are only a few extra things you need to make these wallets:

  • A thumbtack
  • Elastic cord
  • Scissors

I found the instructions on this cool website, Replayground. Check it out and make some on your own! Hope you'll come out and create some cool crafts out of recyclable products this summer and Get Your Green On!

Project Duct Tape
Posted by: Sarah Cofer

In keeping with our green theme this summer, and in the spirit of finding other uses for everyday items, we are having a DUCT TAPE program at the Northwest Library this Saturday.  Duct tape can (allegedly) hold together broken parts of your car and cure plantars warts, but did you know you can also make clothing and accessories out of it?

Duck brand Duct Tape even has a scholarship competition for couples who create their prom outfits out of duct tape.  The winners receive $3,000 EACH!

We won’t be quite that ambitious with this program.  But if you have always wanted a tiara, a tie, a belt, or flip-flops made out of duct tape, stop by the Northwest Library Saturday afternoon.  We have two different books with instructions on a variety of duct tape projects, as well as an assortment of colors.  Graduating high school seniors – I recommend the flip-flops.  You’ll need them for your dorm shower!

PROJECT DUCT TAPE

Saturday, June 13 from 2-4pm

P.S. Feel free to bring your own duct tape if you want to be sure to have your favorite color!

We will also have other consoles set up around the library for those who are not playing or watching the tournament, fun games like “name that rock song,” “pin the guitar on the rocker,” and temporary tattoo design, and of course, delicious snacks!
Super awesome rock star outfits and accessories are highly encouraged! Just remember to keep it appropriate. Library staffmembers will also be wearing their most awesome rock attire!

    Read-a-Thon $$$$ Update
Hello all! I hope you all are enjoying your holiday time-off from school. I know I’ve been enjoying the extra days off, and I REALLY enjoyed our super warm weather the other day- 68 degrees or something?! I’m not a big fan of snow (or precipitation in general really) so I was fine without snow.
I wanted to let you know that your earnings from the Read-a-Thon bought the youth at the United Methodist Children’s home some awesome gifts this year! Their wish list included DVD players and bath towels, kitchen supplies and board games- all things they needed badly. We were able to get them a some of those items as WELL as gift cards to Target, so they could pick out some things on their own.
We can’t thank you enough for your participation in this year’s Read-a-Thon. Doesn’t it feel good to do-good?
Once you get back into the “swing” of your normal routine, don’t forget about these upcoming events in January at Worthington Libraries!
Drop-In Gaming @ Old Worthington Library on Tuesday January 13th at 6pm
    Self-Defense 101 @ Northwest Library Meeting Room Tuesday January 13th @ 7pm
Drop-In Study Break @ Northwest Library Thursday January 15th from 6pm-9pm

Read-a-Thon Update & Upcoming DIY events
    Posted by: Mandy Simon

Thanks to all who participated in last Saturday's
    Worthington Libraries' Read-a-Thon!
Teens participated at each library location, reading for charity! In addition to reading, teens played games, won prizes and more. The deadline to turn your pledges in is TODAY: WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 10th, so be sure to get your $$ to the library, if you haven't already. We want to make sure we can pull it all together and get some great holiday gifts for the youth at UMCH!
If school is stressing you out, or you’re already broke this holiday season, don’t forget about the Teen Craft Drop-In and Holiday DIY coming up at your Worthington Libraries!
    •  On December 11, stop by the Northwest Library between 5pm and 8pm and make fun gift card holders out of old CD cases, or turn old containers into gift boxes, or even bring your own gifts to wrap.  We’ll be using TONS of leftover craft supplies, so the sky is the limit!
    • Then, on December 17th, Worthington Park Library will be hosting a Holiday DIY event starting at 6pm.  We’ll be working with paper again- but if you have anything you’d like to bring to “spruce up” with our crafts (or maybe some more Mod Podge) bring it along! We’ll also have snacks!

Mark your calendars and hope to see you there!

    WORTHINGTON LIBRARIES TEEN READ-A-THON

    DECEMBER 6th, 2008

On December 6th, Worthington Libraries will be hosting a Teen Read-A-Thon to earn money to buy holiday presents for the youth at the United Methodist Children's Home.  Last year we raised just over $900 and hope to raise even more this year.

Readers in 7th through 12th grade are encouraged to participate in Worthington Libraries Teen Read-a-Thon on Saturday, December 6 from 9am to 6pm. Come to the library branch you prefer! We'll be hosting Read-A-Thons at all three Worthington Libraries locations: Northwest, Old Worthington and Worthington park.

Participants can pick up a pledge form at any Worthington Libraries location.

    Who It Benefits:
The youth at the United Methodist Children's Home.

    Goal: $1000
Last year we raised $900 for the United Methodist Children's Home. Let's raise more this year!

    Rock the Vote Results!
    Posted by: Mandy Simon

TEEN Rock the Vote @ Worthington Libraries- The results are in!
We’ve tallied up all the votes between all three library locations, and Barack Obama won in the libraries' election, as well as in the “real” election!
    Barack Obama 82%
    John McCain 17%
    Ralph Nader .01%
Thanks to all of you who participated in Rock the Vote and hopefully you were able to check out the binders in the Teen areas that explained a little bit more about each candidate.
I’ve been reading news headlines about how many young people turned out to vote in the real Presidential election and have just been amazed by the numbers. More young people voted in this election than ever before! As I was surfing from website to website reading about it, I came across this interesting organization called Generation We.  They say there are more people born between the years 1978-2000 than there were baby-boomers! They say Generation We (or The Millenials) is 95 million people strong, and that they’re going to make a huge difference as they grow up and influence the world. The website and video is pretty inspiring- I suggest checking it out!
In other news, we have a big celebration coming up in the beginning of December that is going to be happening at ALL THREE WORTHINGTON LIBRARIES LOCATIONS. There’s going to be ‘something for everyone’ on
December 6th at Northwest Library, Old Worthington Library and Worthington Park Library, as we celebrate the completion of the renovation projects at all three buildings. There will be costumed characters for the little kids, tours of the facilities for the adults- but the coolest part?
The Teen Read-a-Thon is happening December 6th!
    What is it?
We’re asking Worthington Teens to get pledges from family, friends, or anyone else you can think of—for pages read or donations. Then, all day long on Saturday December 6th from 9am to 6pm, in the TEEN AREA of EACH WORTHINGTON LIBRARIES LOCATION, teens will be invited to get comfortable and grab a book and read. We’ll be breaking for crafts and activities, having raffles and snacks, and basically it’s a time to hang out, read a book, and have fun.
    Why?
Why are we asking you to get money? Because with the proceeds of the Teen Read-a-Thon, we purchase holiday gifts for the youth at the United Methodist Children’s Home. Last year we raised about $900 to buy gifts for them, and this year our goal is $1000! We really hope to get some great stuff for them again this year-- so you should help!
Oh—AND LAST YEAR WAS A TON OF FUN, TOO!
Just wanted to let you know so you can all clear your schedules!!! Remember, Saturday December 6th! More details and info to come.

    Is It REALLY Almost November?!
    Posted by: Mandy Simon

    Posters of Broadway Shows

Everyone's filling out their ballots at Worthington Park. I can't wait to see who wins the Teen Rock the Vote Library Presidential election! I'm almost running out of ballots at Worthington Park! In addition to the election being just a few weeks away....so is November, which is...National Novel Writing Month!

National Novel Writing Month: 2008 logo #1

So I think I've always known that November is National Novel Writing Month—but for some reason (probably because I found this Web site: http://www.nanowrimo.org) this year, it's sticking with me.

First off, I've always wanted to write a book. It doesn't HAVE to be a novel. It could be a collection of essays or even a joke book or a picture book for kids. I don't care which kind, I've just always wanted to write one. That being said, my main excuse has always been I don't have TIME to write a book. I know I know, poor excuse.

National Novel Writing Month: 2008 logo #1

And it makes me wonder: why did they pick NOVEMBER for National Novel Writing month?! I mean honestly: November is always so busy with Thanksgiving, and getting ready for Christmas (?!).... how is a person supposed to write a novel?! In a month?!

At any rate, I'm thinking about giving it a shot. Maybe not writing a WHOLE novel, but definitely getting back on the writing bandwagon I was on when I went to college. Would anyone else be interested in doing some writing workshops at Worthington Park Library after school? Maybe this winter?

I might need some Teen help to get my creative juices flowing! Post a comment if this is something you'd like to attend this winter, and I'll see what I can do.

Also, if you're in Worthington Park Library, check out the new Letters on top of the bookshelves that spell out T-E-E-N. We started painting and decorating them last night and I think they look really neat! We still have more work to do on them, so if you're interested (and can track me down while you're at the library) let me know if you'd like to contribute to the 'communal art project' that is the T-E-E-N Sign at Worthington Park. I'll get the supplies out for you and create a workspace. The more teens who contribute, the cooler the end result will be!

I'll be sure to post some more pictures of the sign asap. Thanks!

This Friday, October 24th, Northwest Library will be hosting TGIF: Hats Off to Broadway! A totally Broadway-inspired theme event!

    Posters of Broadway Shows

The event starts at 6pm when the library usually closes for regular folk — and opens back up just for YOU! We will have Broadway trivia, a Broadway style "Name that Tune" and finish the evening off with a performance of Little Library of Horrors (adapted from the musical Little Shop of Horrors by my librarian friend Robb Mackenzie).

October Is So BUSY at the Library!

    Teen Read Week

Well, Teen Read Week was a blast — and we had lots of fun, food and activities all week at the Worthington Libraries. I've posted some pictures from Worthington Park in the Fall 2008 picture section. Now, with Teen Read Week over, it's time to move on to other fun events at the library!

Northwest and Worthington Park's children's sections of the library have been given their final "facelift" for the last steps of the Worthington Libraries' system-wide renovation. I put up some more pictures of Worthington Park. I think it looks great! It's much more colorful and the little kids who come into the library love seeing all of the characters on the walls and the carousel in the corner. I can't wait to see Old Worthington's finished product!

    Worthington Park's Storytime Carousel

Because the Children's area looks so fancy, I decided that the Teen Area at Worthington Park needs some tweaking, too, as far as decorations go. So, this Wednesday at Worthington Park's Drop In DIY night (from 5-8pm) we'll be decorating huge letters that spell out the word TEEN, to place on top of the shelving in the Teen Area. In addition to being a cool way to let people know where the teen books are, it's an opportunity for you teens to showcase your artistic talents and put them on display at the library. I can't wait to post pictures once they're finished!

    Care Bears: Grumpy Bear

Speaking of DIY crafts, I've finally decided what I'm going to be for Halloween—and it's a DIY project! I have been attempting to sew and craft it together in my spare time. Here's where I got my inspiration. I'm not sure which character I'm going to be yet; but I have some options with three different colored suits. Haha! Is anyone else dressing up this year? Making your own costumes? I'd love to see them or hear about your ideas!

    'Vote' button

We've also started the Rock the Vote Campaign for Teens at all three branches.

Go to the teen area and vote for YOUR choice for President!

Also, if you'd like to make a suggestion for programs and projects to do at the library, you can include that on the back of your ballot! If you don't see a ballot box or ballots laying around, ask a Librarian and they'll track some down for you. We've also go information on the candidates available at all three locations, so take a gander and vote on the candidate that you like best!

We'll be posting more info about upcoming events, so keep coming back to the blog; or chat up your branch's Teen Librarian to hear about the fun stuff that's planned!!!

    TEEN READ WEEK 2008!
    Posted by: Mandy Simon

'Programs with Bite' Poster October 13th-17th, 2008 is:
    TEEN READ WEEK!!!!

'Teen Read Week' logo What is it?
Each year, the American Library Association's teen division (YALSA: Young Adult Library Services Association) creates a theme for this week – Teen Read Week. The idea is to get teens excited about reading. In fact, their overall theme is always "Read for the Fun of it!" which – duh, reading IS fun. But this year's theme (in addition to Read for the fun of it) is Books with Bite.

Since the theme is Books with Bite, Worthington Libraries teen librarians got together and came up with some fun activities to do this coming week, which all have to do with "biting".

Worthington Libraries is celebrating Teen Read Week this year at ALL THREE BRANCHES with cool activities for Teens Monday through Thursday.

So to celebrate BOOKS WITH BITE at Worthington Libraries: Books with Bite @ Your Library
    • We're making candy sushi you can BITE into (It just LOOKS like sushi, but is made out of candy!)
    • We're watching scary BITING movies (Old-timey flicks on in the teen area!)
    • We're playing Wii BITING games
    • Making sweet BITING goth puppets (okay it might be tough to make them bite, but they'll look cool – Ha!)
    • And playing BITING Pacman tournaments at the library.
To find out which library is having each event each night, you can grab an ETC newsletter, look here on the Worthington Libraries Web site, or call the library at 614-807-2626.

Registration is not required so stop by!!!

Anime Teen Screen: One Down, More to Come!
    Posted by: Sarah Cofer

Characters from 'School Rumble' Northwest Library held its very first Anime Teen Screen last Saturday. We watched the first six episodes of the anime series "Fruits Basket", about a girl who befriends three guys possessed by spirits of the zodiac. Basically that means that whenever they touch a girl they turn into whichever animal spirit possesses them, like a cat, a rat, or a dog. There are three other DVDs that follow, and Worthington Libraries owns them all! Along with the manga that it's based on, of course.

Twenty-two people attended — we actually ran out of seats in the teen room and people had to sit on the floor! The viewers voted on what to watch next month, and SCHOOL RUMBLE was the winner! The DVD description says it's "The absolutely funniest show you'll ever see that's not about anything that rumbles... ever!" MoonPhase came in a close second. We'll be showing School Rumble on Saturday, October 11 at 3pm. Come early to get a good seat...

Author John Green Answers *Your* Questions!
    Posted by: Sarah Cofer

The John Green event on Monday was AMAZING! Thanks so much to the 115 Nerdfighters who showed up to support the library and see John Green! It was one of the best library programs ever and totally made of awesome!

When he arrived, we sat him down in the Northwest Library teen room and had him answer YOUR questions by video to post on our Worthingteens blog.

Watch what John Green had to say:

'A Night of Awesome with John Green' Poster During the official event, John talked about lots of things: comparing blogging, YouTube, etc. to the actual process of writing (one being more participatory), becoming a writer, his new book Paper Towns, etc. He answered about 20 questions from the audience. We raffled off 3 ARC's of Paper Towns and John also gave away 4 books of his own. Then he autographed lots of books and lots of miscellaneous things like shoes, bags, other people's books, posed for LOTS of pics and received LOTS of hugs. Everyone was thanking him for coming and thanking us for having him. It was a great night. I really hope we can have John Green back to Worthington Libraries someday!

John Green:Nerdfighter 'A Night of Awesome with John Green' Poster John Green is coming to Northwest Library in less than a week! WOW! He called me on the phone the other day and even though I wasn't here to take the call (sniff sniff), it was still so cool to get a message that said "John Green called for you." Call me star-struck, but how often does a famous author call me? Definitely never!

John Green mentioned his upcoming visit to Northwest on his video blog today and I am now even more excited (if that is possible). I just can't wait!!!

Come celebrate in an "Evening of Awesome" with John Green, author of award winning teen books, Looking for Alaska, An Abundance of Katherines, and his newest upcoming release: Paper Towns!

    • 'Looking for Alaska' by John Green
    • 'Paper Towns' by John Green
    • 'An Abundance of Katherines' by John Green
John will be talking about his books, the famous Brotherhood 2.0 video-blogging project (check it out if you haven't already at http://www.brotherhood2.com) and writing in general. He'll also be answering questions and signing books. Books will be available for purchase at the library, and we'll be raffling off signed copies—even Advanced Readers Copies of Paper Towns!

Come hang out and show John Green what kind of Nerdfighters we are in Ohio!
    When: Monday, September 8th, 2008
    Time: 7:00 pm
Where: Northwest Library, outdoor area (in back of the library)
Fire up your questions and John Green might answer them during a video he will help us make for our website!

What would you ask John Green if given the chance? And as John would say: "Post your answers in the comments!"

Teen librarians will be selecting the most creative questions to ask John while he's here—and he'll answer in a video blog!

NWL Anime Screening - "Fruits Basket: A Great Transformation?"
    Posted by: Sarah Cofer

FruitsBasket: A Great Transformation The FIRST EVER Anime Teen Screen is happening Saturday, September 20th at 3pm at the Northwest Library. We'll be showing the first six episodes of anime series "Fruits Basket" (also called Furuba), based on the graphic novel series by Natsuki Takaya (which are available at all three of your beloved Worthington Libraries). We'll hole up in the new teen room, snack on snacks, and watch "Fruits Basket" on a big screen.

This is the first of three anime screenings this fall - you'll have the opportunity to vote on which titles we watch in the coming months. The best part is, the library gets to keep the movies we screen!

It's called a SCREENING because the company that gives us the DVDs, FUNimation, wants to know what YOU think. After the show, you have the opportunity to give your review and help FUNimation decide which shows and movies are popular! If you love anime, don't miss this chance to tell FUNimation what you like (they bring a lot of Anime to the U.S. – check out their website), and help the library pick which titles to screen next. If you're new to anime, come see what it's all about!

No need to register – just show up with all your anime-loving or wannabe-anime-loving friends.

Bloggers – I'm no anime expert. How would you explain anime?

This Thursday, July 10, we will be learning all about Yoga from the instructors at Harmony House. The event will begin at 4pm at Northwest Library and will be held in the Storygarden inside the childrens area.

Yoga has tons of benefits. It can improve flexibility, strength, balance, and stamina. In addition to the physical benefits, many people who practice yoga say that it reduces anxiety and stress and improves mental clarity. To learn more about yoga, check out this informative article by the Nemours Foundation.

This is our third event in the Body Check series. Last time we learned Tae Kwon Do from Master Laura Clements. Everyone who participated got to break blocks with their hands and Master Laura broke three blocks by kicking them. It was AWESOME! If you are interested in learning Yoga this week, please call 807-2626 or email scofer@worthingtonlibraries.org to register today. Space is limited to 20 because of the size of the room and I have just a few more spots.

Jeff Smith Exhibit @ the Wexner Center

Last night I went down to the Wexner Center on Ohio State’s campus for the opening of their newest exhibits. Mainly I went because Jeff Smith, the author and illustrator of the graphic novel Bone series has an exhibit there right now. It was so cool. First off, it was neat to be in the Wexner Center museum itself, which was designed in a really funky way by Peter Eisenmen from New York, and Richard Trott of Columbus. Walking down the hallways inside and outside of the building is really neat- the ground slowly ramps down or up while the building around you seems to do the opposite.
But the exhibit itself was neat because it showed the actual cells/pages from the Bone books, as they were created with blue pencil and then inked on top. It was interesting to see the places where they used white-out or scribbled notes into the margins. The exhibit is going on from May 10th to August 3rd, so there’s plenty of time to go see it..AND it’s free! I definitely recommend checking it out.
While I was at the Wexner Center, I noticed they have some really cool programs for teens coming up this summer. They all cost some money, but there were several I thought looked like fun. Click here to check them out.

    Can You Stump a Librarian?
    Posted by: Sarah Cofer

    'Stump the Librarian' Poster

Celebrate National Library Week by trying to stump your local librarian! Perhaps you've been perplexed over how high a jack rabbit can hop or what fast food burgers are really made of...now is your chance!

You've got questions and we've (hopefully) got answers! This is your chance to test our mad reference skills. Stop by the Northwest Library Information Desk or the Old Worthington Information Desk anytime between April 13 - 19 to Stump A Librarian!

    How it works:

    • Anytime April 13-19, ask a question, any question
    • Librarians have 5 minutes to answer your question, or we are stumped (DOH!)
    • If you succesfully stump a librarian, you will be entered in a drawing to win a Creative Zen MP3 player. (Yes, stump the librarian and get a prize for it!)
    Creative Zen MP3 Player

Of course, there are a few rules:

    • It must be possible to find the answer to your question in the library's print or electronic resources or on the internet.
    • You must ask your question in person—no questions permited via e-mail, over the telephone or through HomeworkNow.
    • And you can try to stump the librarian up to two times per day.

Any questions, send me an email! And Good luck stumping me—I rock at reference!!

    Teen Read-a-Thon Poster

On December 1st, the Northwest Library will be hosting a Read-A-Thon to earn money to buy holiday presents for the youth at the United Methodist Children's Home. Last year, we held a Holiday Bazaar where we sold baked goods, crafts and gently used items. We raised just over $600 and hope to raise even more this year. Because of the renovation, we don't have the space to hold the Bazaar, so we came up with the idea of the Read-A-Thon!

The Read-A-Thon will feature celebrity readers: Margaret Peterson Haddix and Lisa Klein!! See the schedule of events below.

Readers in 7th through 12th grade are encouraged to participate in Northwest Library's Teen Read-a-Thon on Saturday, December 1 from 9am to 6pm. During these 9 hours, participants should try to read as much as they can.

Participants can pick up a pledge form at the Northwest Library Information Desk.

    Who It Benefits:
The youth at the United Methodist Children's Home.

    Goal: $800
Last year we raised $650 for the United Methodist Children's Home. Let's raise more this year!

    Schedule of Events:

9:00am:   Get settled. Wear comfy clothes, and feel free to bring sleeping bags, blankets, and pillows to create your own cozy nook in the Story Garden.

9:30am:   Celebrity Reader: Margaret Peterson Haddix will read from her newest book Uprising. After Margaret Peterson Haddix is done reading, we will raffle off an autographed copy of her book!

    'Uprising' by Margaret Peterson Haddix

4:30pm:   Reading Olympics! To celebrate the end of the Read-a-Thon, we'll have a little fun. Can you read while Hula Hooping? How about the Limbo?

    • Every hour we will have a 5 minute break and raffle off cool prizes!
    • T-SHIRTS TOO!! The 30 teens who read the most pages will receive a T-Shirt with the Read-A-Thon logo.

Download the Pledge Form here (PDF; 976KB) or pick up a copy at the Northwest Library Information Desk. All forms and money raised should be turned in by December 8.

Theater MasksMake picture books come alive by turning them into scripts and acting them out during storytime theatre!

During storytime theatre, the teen readers' theatre troupe will perform a medley of stories and songs. We are looking for teens who love to sing and act and are able to make it to the weekly practice sessions.
