Beautiful Nightmare
Oh lethal lover,
Dear dreamy demise,
My morbid mate,
Such retarded reprise

Oath-breaker thrice,
But desire of my heart,
Disease of the mind,
Villian of thine art,

My beautiful nightmare,
And delicious divine,
A drug to my soul,
My bloody valentine.

The fire to my ice,
And other half of me,
Haphazardly lost,
A hot mess, sweetly.

Your essence, a magnet,
My personalized addiction,
Oh, how oblivious you are
To my legitimate convictions.

You perceive my anguish,
The source of my pain,
Yet you do nothing.
By Love, I am slain.

By also, Love saves,
Such blessing, this curse,
Forever, I’m yours,
Breath to preserve.

 Tear-streaked Trail

White snow falls,
a beautiful image we
hide behind,
a veil between truth
and death.
Children catch it.
I huddle,
head down,
eyes to the ground.
White snow,
white like
my enemy,
the demons who
took our land.
A tear
rolls down my cheek
as the snow falls at my feet.
My heart is
frozen as the
ice that
spiderwebs across
the river.
Another tear
plummets,
glistening against
my skin.
Yet,
onward I travel.
Death lies
behind me;
uncertainty
stretches ahead.
Neither way holds
promise.
But life still
courses through me.
Struggles may
weigh me down, and
tears can fall—
I will march on.

Wish

It’s the same wish,
Over and over,
A perpetual thought,
Until my lips are bruised
And my mind is numb
And my heart is about to burst wide open.
I throw my spirit to the Skies and beseech Them—

Starlight, star-bright,
I give to you my wish tonight.
Star-shine, these stars of mine,
A dreamer yearns her telling sign.
Star-crossed, celestial dance,
The soul of one caught in a trance.
All that glitters, all that falls,
Thy spirit, a hope, for one, for all.

-As I sway to the lullaby the nightlife sing,
As the night wind caresses my cheek,
As the sweet street lights embrace their portrait paints…
I twirl in Night’s revelry,
For this perpetual longing, unchanging desire,
Repeating without a lull through the deserts of time
Within my core, reverberates throughout my body…
Swing high, spin low, all that sparkles will wish tonight,
And here we dance, drunk on life, drunk on life.
Drunk enough to wish for dreams,
Such invigorating detachment from reality.
Here we dance, drunk with possibilities.

Untitled

You see him there, laughing with his friends
The smirk on his face seems like it’ll never end
His shaggy brown hair fall just in his eyes
While he teases and jokes , just with the guys
That boy sitting there on his desk?
He’s your very best friend, absolutely no contest
He is hand down your very best friend
The one you’d stick with ‘til the very end
So you smile and wave, like you always do
And then he does something completely out of the blue
He gets up and walks away; he ignores you
And guess what? His friends do it too
You think to yourself this has got to be a joke
A prank, some fun, a tease or a poke
You think hey, he’s my best friend
There’s no way that this will ever happen again
Turns out you’re wrong, ‘cause it happens all over
H pretends you’re not sitting alone in the corner
When you wait after class at this locker door
Him and his friends shuffle past, eyes on the floor
You can feel your heart breaking
Your friendship is tanking
Your memories evading
Your good times are fading
That sweet kid you sat with on the kindergarten bus?
Yeah, he’s no longer one of us
And then he does the unthinkable you see
He starts to date your worst enemy
Your opposite, your arch nemesis
And did you see his status? Yeah, they’ve already kissed
You feel like you just want to just curl up and die
Your insides are breaking, and you really want to cry
But on the outside, you’re on top of the world.
You’re the cool kid, the popular girl.
You get invited to everything
Your friend requests? Could fill up the White House West Wing
You’re nice, funny, and beautiful too
Everyone just wants to be around you
But no one can see through your external shell
No one knows why you’re not feeling so well
Or why you’ve stopped going to parties and dances
Or how come you’re turning down countless romances
Well, it’s because your heart belongs to him, y our best friend
The one who said he’d be there ‘til the end
He took your heart, he took it so far
And in its place? A thick, bloody scar
But he did something else, something you’ll never forgive
No, simply not for as long as you live
It’s not that he ignored you or pretended you weren’t there
Or acted like, about you, he just didn’t care
Or all the texts he deleted, all the requests he turned down
Or returning all of your smiles with a stare and a frown
Or even falling in love with another
No, it’s that he prevented that he just wasn’t your brother.

2,973

2,973.
Mothers,
sisters,
daughters.
Fathers,
brothers,
sons.
Babies,
taking their first steps.
Elderly,
taking their last breaths.
Blondes,
brunettes,
blue eyes.
Loved ones,
family,
friends.
Have you ever stopped
and thought
about how many innocent lives
were forever ended?

A mother,
working for her son,
wishing a better life for him,
paying for his collage fund.

A father,
walking his daughter to school,
stopped to grab a band-aid
to cover her new small wound.

A child,
his life no longer than one year
was taken by his grandmother
to see where his daddy worked.

The stories
stretch on and on,
as one by one we count
each and every life lost that day
from young
to new
to old.

Close your eyes,
I ask of you,
and imagine
the pain
the horror
the fear
of losing a person close to you
due to hatred
so unclear.

Do you understand now,
why it is to important
to care?
Why you should stand by the flag
and hold your freedom dear?
In your heart
I pray you feel
the sorrow that I do,
but also I beg you feel the hope
that one day
those who lost their entire world,
their faith shall be renewed.

Hope.
Love.
Remember.
September 11, 2001

*this poem was written in honor of those who died due to the terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, 2001. In the number of death, though, the terrorists themselves are not added into the total calculation, because, in my opinion, they should not be honored for murdering 2,973 innocent lives. I pray that every one of the souls lost on that day will never be forgotten.
3rd place tie
Molly Haines, Phoenix Middle School, grade 7

Bread

They throw bread at us,
The Nazis, laughing as we scramble to see
Is it real? Real bread?

We are starving,
Scarily skinny

We all crane our necks in to get as better view of the treasure.
Eight small chunks of bread
Lay on the street.
Eight pieces of bread,
For hundreds of people

Reaching, Snatching
Clawing, Fighting,

The hunger of man triumphs over moral code,
There is total chaos
For eight small pieces of bread

Moving Day

Why, oh why, does the world hate me so?
Why to Indiana must my best friend go?
Why are the movers moving her things?
I feel like a bird with broken wings,

Because no matter how hard I try
I really just can’t fly
To Indiana to be with my friend.
Why, oh why, does it all have to end?!

All the memories we have, all the jokes we share,
Playing for hours in the hot summer air.
My 12th birthday party we spent at the mall,
Hanging out after class, talking in the hall.

Allison’s obsession with fire and wood,
And burning the fire higher than she should.
At my 10th birthday, while all the guest were inside,
You and me stayed outside and caught fireflies.

Oh Allison, why can’t you see?
When you left, you took a part of me.
A big part, actually a very large part,
Allison when you left, you took a chunk of my heart

How can I express our friendship so long?
Well, I’ve got it! I’ll write you a song!
So I changed the words to “I miss you”
And told you how I want to be with you

So on one of your last nights here,
I sang you a song about our many years.
I sang it to her staring off into space,
And in the middle, I see tears on her face.

So when the time for moving day arose, I told Allison something she already knows.
I told her I love her and am going to miss her,
Because it’s really hard living without your sister.

That's right, Worthington Libraries 8th Annual Teen Poetry and Short Story Competition ends TODAY.  If you haven't yet submitted your poems or short stories, this is your last chance! You can submit your poem or story by bringing it to the library or by emailing it to gnzimiro@worthingtonlibraries.org. Please include the poetry/short story titles, your school, grade and address when you email your entry. Whichever way you submit your work, remember to complete and sign our official entry form, available at all three library locations.

  • Any short story or poem entered must be the original, unpublished work of the entrant, not previously entered for any other Worthington Libraries competition.
  • Poems should not exceed 30 lines.
  • Stories can be of any genre/theme. They can be either fiction or non-fiction. But they must be between 1,000 and 2,500 words in length.
  • Entries should be typed.
We will contact the winners in late April and annouce them at the April 29 Open Mic reading, held from 7-9pm at the Old Worthington Library.
Still not ready? We'll be accepting entries through Saturday so you'll have a little more time to procrastinate (um, er... polish up) your story/poem.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day writing contest
Posted by: Sarah Cofer

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Life’s most urgent question is: what are you doing for others?” He dedicated his life to the pursuit of civil rights and racial equality. His dream for the future was that all people live together peacefully.

Please limit your entries to a  maximum of three pages, doublespaced. Submit your typed entry, along with your name, grade, school and phone number, to any Worthington Libraries location before December 1.

Entries will be reviewed by a panel of judges and some will be selected for inclusion in the Martin Luther King Day celebration program on January 19. If your piece is selected, you will be asked to read it during the program.

Find CATHY'S BOOK!
Posted by: Sarah Cofer

Cathy's Book is a unique and suspenseful story of one girl's attempts to unravel a mystery that keeps getting bigger, in a strange and fascinating world where things often aren't as they appear. CATHY'S BOOK is unlike anything you have ever read because it's interactive. It features letters, photographs, date book entries, telephone numbers you can call and websites you can access to learn more about the story.

Cathy's Book I hid one copy of Cathy's Book. Here are the clues. Happy Hunting!
1. Go to Hard Rd.
2. Look for a building with a swoop and lots of glass windows.
3. People of all ages come here to get info.
4. Two's and Three's read here on Mondays at 10
5. Say "Hi" to Amelia Bedelia
6. Admire the Fall Leaves
