T-Shirts and Free Speech
Posted by: Sarah Cofer

Hmm....what do you think about this news article from The Morning Call:

Palmerton High School students protested their school's new dress code by showing up to class wearing shirts that read "Property of PHS" and their student identification numbers. Students were told to remove them or face in-school suspensions. One student said he was suspended for refusing to change his shirt.

The American Civil Liberties Union says the school district was wrong to reprimand students who wore T-shirts protesting a new dress code.  According to The Morning Call, the American Civil Liberties Union sees that as a violation of the students' right to free speech and is willing to take the case to federal court.

What do you think? Were the students just exercising their right to free speech or was the school just trying to "maintain order?"

  Continuing the discussion...

There's been so much media attention on this story. Its taking a toll on us kids. I should know, considering I was one of the students sent home that day for wearing the T-shirt.

We are taking legal action and right now we are currently awaiting a decision from the school stating if they will remove the illegal absenses we were given and allow us to wear those shirt again. If not, we will be taking it to federal court.

Most people think that we are just a bunch of "rebel-without-a-cause", "you should just listen to rules" kids, but they were not there that day and most of them don't understand the full meaning behind the shirts.

We are supported by our family and friends and a majority of the community that we don't know. I kindly thank everyone for that.

My parents are proud of me. And I'm proud of myself for what I've done. I'm proud to stick up for what I believe in, whether it be my rights and piercings or, other's rules and gay marriage.

***Stick up for your rights.

Not sure it was wrong to wear those t-shirts. However, I think dress codes are important, considering modesty is almost non-existent now.
